The book is so different from the movie. Lots of points to compare and contrast. Why the changes? Your thoughts? Why not attend one of the movie showings at the library and share your thoughts with others.

I give the book a 2/5, not because the writing was bad or the story was bad.
I just can't get into a book about a coal mining town in the 1950's.
When i pick up a book I look for something that's out of this world, but if I was into historical things I would say it's pretty good
It still started out slow though.

Rocket Boys was an OK book but i wouldn't wont to read it again. If you like rockets and NASA this is the book for you. It tell you a lot about the types of fuel and the materials that they use.

i read rocket boys in my first period class at school,i didn't think that it would turn out it be as good as it was. i loved how the boys devoted all there time to better their rockets. How they took on hard classes just to learn how to build them more efficient. For something i was requited to read at school i liked it, i probably wouldn't have picked it out on my own.

Overall, I enjoyed reading Rocket Boys. It did take me a while to get interested in it and some of the scenes were a little drawn out, but once I got going it was actually okay. The main frustration I had was I already saw October Sky before reading Rocket Boys, so I already knew what was going to happen, so it ruined the endings and all. I admire the hard work and perseverance the boys showed throughout the story, and it helped me remember that any dream I have can be achieved, no matter how difficult.

I first read Rocket Boys back when it first came out. I enjoyed it then. I listened to it this summer. I found the interactions between Sonny and his parents to be very compelling. While his father never could show his love for his son in words, he did manage to do so in actions..in a backwards way. The way the entire town came together to support the Rocket Boys was very touching. There is so much more to this book than rockets. For the record, I love Sonny's mom's sarcasm. It is the icing on the cake. It is very well done in the audio version.

At the beginning of the book I had a really low opnion of Homer Sr. However, by the end of the book I felt like he was someone who really did want what was best for Sonny and Coalwood. The problem was that forces beyond his control made his vision of what Coalwood should be like impossible.

Rocket Boys captured the reader with thorough description of the rocket building process. Part of the reason I enjoyed it so much, is the actual functions of the components of the rockets. Hickam’s relation of the science in rocketry was easily understandable, and adds to the significance of his personal mission. Over the last year, I have visited the U.S. Rockets and Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama, twice and I started to become interested in rocket missions and the different components of rocketry. To build on my knowledge I then started reading Lost Moon, about the Apollo 13 mission. As conclusion, I really enjoyed the program and the book.

Dear Wells County "One Book, One County" Rocket Boys readers,
I am presently writing a fiction novel using my paleontology dinosaur hunting knowledge, yet, due to the interest of your kind community, I find myself drawn once more back to my second book, a memoir of a boy growing up in the coalfields of West Virginia. Very surprising to me, Rocket Boys (also known as October Sky - which is an anagram of Rocket Boys) has become one of those rarities in literature, a cultural phenomenon that transcends its author.
I am pleased to thank all of you and celebrate the selection of my memoir even as I am sensitive to the misperceptions about it. The greatest misperception is that the book is about rockets and space flight. Certainly, the book has a strong thread about boys dreaming of space and boldly building rockets from scrap, but there is a larger, more important story. Once, in the wilderness of West Virginia in a tiny coal camp, a boy was allowed to find understanding through a series of dramatic acts of reconciliation and redemption by his parents and the people of his town. That lucky soul was the boy I once was, the small near-sighted "Sonny" Hickam, the second and somewhat lackluster son of Homer (Sr.) and Elsie Hickam of Coalwood, West Virginia.
Small towns with people who care, good friends, understanding and reconciliation between parents and children, then, is what I believe Rocket Boys/October Sky is really about. These themes thrum through the book like a low, insistent note. To tell this story was a journey of the heart. I am so glad that the readers of your area have decided to make the journey with me. Please enjoy Rocket Boys/October Sky and then I hope you will want to read others of my books.
Aim High,
Homer Hickam

For all those enjoying "Rocket Boys" here is a little perk. The International Space Station will be visible for the next three nights. Look in the southwest sky, it will be low about 2 to 4 thumbs above the horizon. It should be moving from right to left. Here are the times
Wednesday, Sept 9 from 9:40 to 9:44 PM
Thursday, Sept 10 from 8:29-8:35 and 10:05 to 10:08 PM
