Fairview Cemetery
Location: State Road 124, ¾ miles east of Bluffton in Lancaster Township, Wells County, Indiana.
The original introduction states: “In 1874 a group of fourteen citizens purchased 40 acres of land from Mr. and Mrs. Newton Burwell to be used as a community burial place. It was incorporated in 1902. Twenty-six additional acres were purchased in 1921 from Mr. & Mrs. William Hunt. The mausoleum erected in 1918 holds 260 crypts. Data was compiled by Mrs. Lester Bingaman; Mrs. Bill K. Campbell; Mrs. Thomas Williams and the Girl Scout Cadettes #206.
The Evening News dated October 2, 1902 states Newton Burwell laid out the cemetery over thirty years ago. The Wells County Family History 1837-1992 (page 95) states “Ferdinand Effinger originally plotted the Fairview Cemetery, reserving an area as a Catholic burying ground”.
