Gearnand / Grannand Cemetery
Location: On county road 400 E, north of 650 S in Nottingham township, Wells County, Indiana.
The original introduction states: “The land for the Gearnand Cemetery was donated for use as a community burial ground by Peter Gearnand. The oldest marker found was that of Lucinda Foust, who died in 1836, however, there may have been others who are older for many of the stones were broken, missing or unreadable. A partial record had been kept [without dates] of the earliest burials here and these names have been added to our records. This data was compiled by Mrs. Everett King, Mrs. Clara Stout, and Mrs. Olive Worman, members of the Wells County Historical Society.”
The Evening News-Banner centennial edition states Joseph Blackledge first settler in 1837. “John Dawson, Lyman Bass, Hezekiah Grimes, Peter Garner, Abram Stahl, John Nutter, Isaac and Edward Haynes, Robert Smith and William Nutter came here with their families in the year following Blackledge’s settlement….Jacob Warner…in 1838”
S. Dailey walked this cemetery during the summer of 1999. Two plot maps were borrowed from G. Warner in July 1999, copied and the information incorporated into this update. The maps did not provide any dates.
