Grove Cemetery
Location: On County Road 100 E south of 500 S in Harrison Township, Wells County, Indiana.
The original introduction
states: “Grove cemetery was founded on land owned by the Grove family. The
first person to be buried here was Raymond Travis in 1834. Data was compiled by
Mrs. Nora Biberstine, member of the Wells County Historical Society.
The Evening News-Banner centennial edition states “James Jackson and Henry and Jane (Thrailkill) Mossburg were the first settler…1836-37…His death occurred November 2, 1838 and he was the first white person to be buried in Liberty township…Others to arrive in the years immediately following were G.H. and Johnson King (1837), James Jackson, David Chapman, Stuart Bolton, Benjamin and Margery Mendenhall (1839), John McFarren, David Goings, George Sparks, George P. Mann, James M. Merriman (1839) John Hupp, John Mounsey, Joseph Groves (1839) and Jacob First (1841).”
J. Maxwell and C. Gilbert walked the cemetery during the summer of 1999. Cemetery records were borrowed, copied and the information incorporated in this new edition. The cemetery records begin September 7, 1922.
