The Sutton families and Elizabeth [Miller] Harvey, the first white child to be born in Wells County, are buried here. Mrs. Martha Hatfield, who died in 1810, was the first person to be buried in Murray Cemetery. Data was submitted by Mr. & Mrs. Guy Wentz members of the Wells County Historical Society.
The Historical Hand Atlas Illustrated (WC 912 Hi) states The first settlement in the county was made in this (Lancaster) township in 1829 by Dr. Joseph Knox and his two sons-in-law, Jacob Van Treese and ____ Varner. Allen and Wm. Norcross came here in 1831 Dr. Knox sold his improvements to Henry Miller in 1832 and Van Treese and Varner sold their improvements to Robert Harvey in the year. The Atlas lists Elijah Sutton in Rock Creek Township not Lancaster.
