Prospect Cemetery
Wells County, Union Township,
Indiana
Location: On County Road 900 N east of County Road 100 W in Union Township, Wells County, Indiana.
The original
introduction states “The land for Prospect Cemetery was donated by Leif
Osborn. The original Prospect Church, erected of hand-hewn logs, was located on
the east side of the cemetery. The present Church site lies across the road from the
cemetery and the first person buried therein was the infant son of John Scott in
1838. Others buried there include
all the charter members of the Church, a young Indian boy and a Negro slave
girl. Data was submitted by Scott
Jones and Jerry Dowty.”
The
Wells County, Indiana Family History
1837-1992 (WC 977.272 WE) states “On December 22, 1853, an acre of land
was purchased from Levi Osborn …The Prospect Cemetery now covers the entire
acre and every charter members is buried there.”
The
Evening News-Banner centennial edition
states “ Union township was the last township to be organized…not open for
settlement until 1846, having been a
part of the Miami Indian Reservation…first settlers…William Rosseau, James
Edmundson, Joseph Rich, Milton Davis, Jacob DeWitt, John Wandel, Joseph Davis
and E. Bagley”
