Spider Hill Cemetery
Methodist Cemetery
Location: On County Road 500 W and north of County Road 200 W in Rock Creek Township, Wells County, Indiana.
The original introduction states “ The ground for Methodist Cemetery (also know as Spider Hill) was purchased in 1861 from the Schnolity family. The Methodist Church was erected here in 1867/8 then was later moved to Rockford, Indiana. Later this Church was abandoned and the congregation moved to it’s present site, a short distance north of the old cemetery. Eliza Young was buried here in 1824. Data was compiled by Mr. Clarence Minniear a member of the Wells County Historical Society.”
The Evening News-Banner centennial edition states “Some of the earliest settlers…
Rockcreek township were Jacob Miller…1832; William Barton…1836 and took up residence in a hollow sycamore tree on the Samuel McAfee farm. Between 1832 and 1848 others that came…Mr. Dewitt, William Redding, Solomon Johnson, Thomas Wallace, Matthew Davis, Theodore Ellingham, a Mr. Smith and Mr. Brown.”
The cemetery is no longer associated with the church and the Spider Hill Cemetery people stress this fact and the name change.
S. Dailey walked this cemetery during the summer of 1999. Cemetery records were borrowed from J. Gilbert in June of 2000, copied and the information incorporated into this revised edition.
