Cruz Cemetery
Location: On the Wells-Adams county line north of County Road 300 S in Harrison Township, Wells County, Indiana.
The original introduction
states “This cemetery was first established by the St. John’s Reformed
Church of Vera Cruz but is used as a public burial ground. The first persons
buried here were Johan and Anna Maria Mertz in 1819 and 1817??. Data was
submitted by Mrs. Gertrude Bilbee, member of the Wells County Historical
Society.”
The Evening News-Banner centennial edition lists the early setters for Harrison Township: “Abraham Studabaker came to Wells county in 1833…his sons here, John, in 1838, and Willialm, in 1839. Almon Case…arrived in 1836…” There is no listing for Mertz in the article.
Several of the headstones are written in German.
